Library Laptop Loan Service
Thirty laptop computers are now available for use in the Cabrillo
College library. The laptops have word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint and
Web browser software. They are wireless and print to the library network printer
behind the Circulation Desk. The laptops can be checked out for two hour loan
periods. The laptops provide an opportunity for self-paced instruction (non-credit)
in the use of computer software and hardware in an open lab environment.Receipt
of an account name and password includes automatic enrollment in CABT 510.
To check out the laptops, a student must have:
1. A library card
2. A photo ID
3. An account name and password issued at the Accounts Computer in either
the 1400 building or in the library
To get an account name and password:
Get your account name and password at the Accounts computer near the Circulation
desk. You will need your Student ID (Datatel) number to look up your account
name and password. New account names and passwords are issued every semester.
This account gives you access to the campus wireless network using either the
laptops in the library or your own personal laptop, computers at the CTC in
Building 1400, and the Watsonville Center computer lab.
Service Details
- Use of these laptops is limited to Cabrillo
College coursework and instruction related activities.
- Currently registered students with a Cabrillo library card may borrow a
laptop, for 2-hour periods. The Library’s laptops may also be borrowed
by Cabrillo staff & faculty. Laptops may not be borrowed by anyone else
not currently registered in a Cabrillo
College class.
- Each laptop comes with Microsoft Office XP, Internet
Explorer, an external mouse, and a power cord.
- Every laptop can be used to connect to the campus
wireless network within the Library.
- Laptop users must have an account name and password,
which may be done using a dedicated station in the Library
- Basic instructions for use are included with
each laptop, addressing saving files, printing files, using the wireless network
to connect to the Internet, and getting an account for use with the wireless
network.
- Questions about this service can be directed
to Circulation staff in the Library.

Use Policies
- Laptop computers must be used inside the Library.
- Laptops are borrowed at the Library’s Circulation
Desk.
- The Library’s Reference Librarians are
available for basic assistance on use and functionality of the laptop computers.
- Two IDs will be required to borrow a laptop:
a Cabrillo library card, and a photo ID.
- Each laptop borrower will be asked to sign a
Laptop Loan Agreement Form once a semester.
- Laptop computers may be checked out for 2 hours
at a time.
- Reserving laptops is not possible at this time.
- Laptops must not be left unattended at
any time.
- Students borrowing a laptop are financially liable
for loss or damage to the laptop computer. Replacement costs are $1,500.00.
- Standard Course Reserve overdue fines are applicable
on laptops, e.g., $5.00 beginning 1 minute after the item is due, an additional
$5.00 after 1 hour overdue, and may be increased for continuing overdue items.
- Any laptop user agrees not to load any additional
software, change system configurations, add plug-ins, or attach unauthorized
hardware on the laptop.
- All users agree to follow the Library’s
Acceptable Use Policy for Electronic Resources, as well as any applicable
federal, state, local, and campus laws.
