At the Reference Desk at the Cabrillo Library: Tuesdays, 11:30 am to 3pm
Leave a message for me on my campus phone: 479-6189 (checked 1 or 2 times per week)
I am also at the Reference Desk at the Watsonville Public Library or the Freedom Branch Library, usually Mon. 10-2pm, Tues. 4:30-8pm, Wed. & Fri. 2-6pm. Please be aware that at Watsonville Public I will also be helping other public library patrons.
Library 10 is designed to be taken in cooperation with your English 1a class. It is a self-paced, workbook-based class that will help you develop your research skills and learn to find, evaluate and use different sources of information. The exercises in the workbook give you hands-on practice using a variety of information resources. Many of the sources you find when completing your workbook will be ones you will be able to use in your final paper for English 1a. Even if the particular materials you find aren’t ones you use in your paper, Library 10 will help you learn how to find the information you will need. So it is good idea to work on your workbook early and then your paper will be easier later!
Library 10 is a one unit class, transferable to the University of California and the California State University System. You may take this class for a letter grade or for Pass/No Pass, but be aware that Pass grades may not be transferable. You must let me know by the date specified below if you want the Pass /No Pass option, otherwise you will receive a letter grade.
The required text for this class is the workbook: Information Research, which is available for sale at the Reference Desk in the Cabrillo College Library in Aptos ($10).
Take your Final (at the Library):

You can correct your workbook and get a higher grade – if you turn it in on or before the due dates. If your workbook is late you may not correct it. Corrected exercises will receive half the regular credit.
Workbooks that are turned in more than one week late, will lose 5 points. Workbooks late by more than 2 weeks will lose 10 points. If you have questions or problems, please contact me.
Don’t leave anything blank.
If you are having trouble finding sources or answering the question, please ask a librarian at the Reference Desk for assistance (479-6163). If a particular question is not relevant, explain why.
Stick to one Topic.
If you change your topic please write a note at the top of the page telling me what your new topic is. If we tell you to look in a particular source and nothing in that source relates to your topic (for instance we tell you to look in a Health database and you are researching Women’s Suffrage) then you can search on another topic you find interesting, but only after you have tried your topic. If you get to pick the database or source to use, pick one that is relevant to your topic.
Find USEFUL SOURCES for your topic.
Find sources you can actually use for your research paper. To tell if an article or website will be a useful source for your paper, you have to actually pull up the article or go to the page—and then read through it. Also, don’t just pick the first article or website from a list unless it is a useful source.
If the text of a magazine or newspaper article is not available (it is not available in fulltext and Cabrillo does not subscribe) then choose another article that is available. Book reviews, Movie reviews, etc. are rarely good sources because they are usually very short and too specific.
Do your own work
You may work together on your workbooks, however you may not use the same sources. If you work together and have the same topic you must choose different books, articles, websites, etc.Write Legibly – If I can’t read it, I can’t grade it!
Be very careful especially when you write a website address (URL). That means PRINT it very carefully and look it over to make sure you don’t skip any letter. And don’t use CAPITAL LETTERS if the URL doesn’t have them (or vice versa).
URL’s written incorrectly will result in lost points. If you write so badly I can’t find the website, you will lose A LOT of points! If you know this may be a problem, then print out and attach the page.
Punctuation and Format do matter in Citations
I do grade on whether you use correct punctuation for MLA citations. We give examples of MLA citations throughout the workbook and in Appendix A. If you are confused about how to cite something, please ask a Librarian.
