English 1A/Library 10 Partnership: Goals and objectives

You will practice effective reading, writing and critical thinking skills as you complete your assignments for English 1A. The keystone project for your English class is a research paper. In Library 10 our goal is to help you discover how to find, evaluate and use information effectively and ethically as you complete your research paper.

Our specific objectives are as follows:

Understand the story of Information; its origins, organization, formats and types.
Be aware of the role of technology and how it has determined the way in which information is presented and accessed.
Articulate a research question into a focused topic and identifying words and concepts to describe that topic.
Design a research strategy, with the ability to reappraise and refine the strategy as needed.
Use the online library catalog to find books and other materials on a focused topic.
Use electronic databases to find periodicals on a focused topic.
Use the Internet to find Web documents on a focused topic.
Critically evaluate sources as to authorship, accuracy, purpose, bias and appropriateness.
Understand and apply the principles of scholarly and ethical research by using appropriate citation formats as we respect intellectual property.

Grading And Due Dates

Library 10 is a one unit class. This class is transferable to University of California and the California State University systems. You may take this class for a letter grade or for a credit/no credit. If you take this class for a grade, do not notify me. If you choose the credit/no credit option notify me on or before the deadline posted on the course calendar.

Grading is as follows:

completion of all the readings, discussions and assignments in the Learning Modules
completion of Part One and Part Two review quizzes
final project: an annotated works cited list consisting of 5 resources that you used to write your research paper.

You can earn 350 points. The readings, discussions and assignments in the Learning Modules= 250 points.
The two quizzes = 25 points each (50 points). The final project, an annotated works cited list = 50 points.

A = 90 - 100 (315 - 350)

B = 80 - 89 (280 - 314)

C = 70 - 79 (245 - 279)

D = 60 - 69 (210 - 2441)

F =59 - 0 (209- 0)

Due Dates: Refer to the Calendar on the Blackboard site to see specific due dates.

Caveats to the learner: Research is challenging work. It requires tenacity and a Sherlock Holmesian "...the games afoot" approach. Self-paced courses require self direction. Know your due dates and pace yourself accordingly.

L10 and English 1A are corequisites. Many of the assignments that you will do in Library 10 will help you complete your assignments in English 1A (and vice versa!) You may not drop Library 10 unless you have dropped English 1A.

Final Project

For your final project you will submit an annotated works cited list of the resources you used to write your research paper for your English class. Select five top quality resources (books, articles, Web sites, interviews, etc.) and create a works cited list following the MLA, CBE or APA style guide. Briefly describe each resource and explain why you included it. The work cited list must be typed using double spaces between each line. This can/should be the same works cited list you write for your English 1A research paper.

Blackboard and L10

You can access our Blackboard class at http://online.cabrillo.edu . To become familiar with this course, you will need to become familiar with Blackboard. Please read Welcome text on our homepage and also play the Orientation movie. Also, you may click on the http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/disted/webct/ for futher assistance. There is a Help button should you have questions.

Additional information: Computers, Software, and Modem Connections

Because this course is self-directed, it will work best for you if you have your own computer at home, or at least one that you will have unlimited access to for several hours per week. Those with limited access should consider enrolling in CABT510, which will give you no-cost access to the campus computer lab during the semester. The Cabrillo library has several workstations as well as laptops (and librarians who can assist you with your research.

As with anything web-based, the more memory your machine has, the happier you will be. You will need a web browser capable of running the Blackboard program. Go to the Check Browse link for a list of validated browsers that you can download. You should also have reliable anti-virus protection installed on your computer.
