Library 10 is a course which analyzes research procedures and techniques. You will find, evaluate, use, and document information from many different sources. You may do your workbook reading and exercises at any time of day which is convenient for you, but please note that there are FIRM DUE DATES FOR TURNING IN YOUR WORK. Late work will have points deducted. Please plan on turning in your work earlier than these dates. You will find that you cannot do high quality work in a very short time. Start now.

  • Buy your workbook at the Library Reference Desk, or at your orientation session during your English 1A class

  • Get your Cabrillo College library card. You will need this card for more than checking out books. If you plan on doing workbook exercises from a computer which is not on this campus, you will need your library card number.

  • Fill out your Time Card each time you work on your workbook. Round off your time to the next half-hour.

  • Pick a topic to research. Keep that topic throughout the workbook. You will need to talk with your English 1A instructor to see what types of topics will work, as the work you do for this workbook will provide you with the bibliography for your main writing assignment.
  • Here are the last days on which I will accept your work. Turn in each section of your workbook as soon as you have finished it.

    Part 1: due October 3rd

    Part 2: due November 14th

Final Exam: We will start giving final exams on Wednesday, Dec. 10th, 2008. I advise you to take the test early.  We will continue to provide the exam through Tuesday, Dec. 16th, 2008.

This course will give you a one-unit letter grade. If you need to take it as Pass/No Pass, then you must talk with me by October 4th.

QUALITY OF WORK: Your quality of work, consisting of the choices you make and the reasoning you demonstrate, will affect your grades greatly. Give yourself enough time to do your best.

I will check every answer, so please print neatly, as I will not give credit for answers which I cannot read. If you cannot find a resource for the information we are requesting, talk with one of the librarians at the Reference Desk about some research strategies. You need to answer each question at a college level.  Please do not say that you cannot find anything on your topic.

If you work with a partner on the same topic, do not write the same answers in your workbook. You must do your own work.

GRADING POLICY: Each part of the workbook counts as one-third of your grade. Your final exam also counts as one-third.

GRADING TIME: Your workbook will be graded and made available to you within two weeks after you turn it in. Turn in and pick up your workbooks at the Reference Desk.

    PLEASE NOTE:

I am aware that each of you has unique knowledge, experiences, and expectations about what you expect your research to be. Do each exercise as it is described, because we hope that you will discover something by doing so.

If you have questions about the workbook, or are puzzled by something, come to the Reference/Instruction desk in the library, or call a librarian at 479-6163.

Because I will not share much classroom time with each of you, I expect that there will be many questions about the assignments.

Ask us. We want you to learn quite a lot of information, and we will help you in any way.
