The remodeled Library/Learning Resources Center has a total of 73,296 square feet in area. Of this space the library occupies roughly 30,000 square feet..

This project began with two existing buildings (1000 and 1050) and totally remodeled them while creating a smooth joining of the two on the second level of the library. A new terrace area was added to South end of the complex. The construction was completed in April 1997, and the move back to the new building took place in the last week of May through the second week of June 1997.

Architecturally the new building was designed to comfortably fit in with the existing campus architecture by having:

The building meets all of Title 24 Seismic Safety requirements for the State of California. The interior furnishings of the library have 10% of the surfaces at a height selected to meet Americans with Disabilities Act specifications. Aisle width and the designated space between tables actually exceed ADA requirements. A small group of disabled students were asked to participate in the planning with an eye towards accommodating the building layout to special needs.

The "physical" interior:

The first floor of the library building provides both traditional library services as well as a full complement of modern technological tools for finding and using information. There are 41 multimedia information workstations in the Reference area for accessing the Web, fulltext online resources and the library online catalog. There are eighteen workstations for self-directed individualized learning and Computer Aided Instruction.

Additional materials/services available include:

  1. A room for small group (up to ten people) viewing of Video presentations.
  2. 15 VCR video viewing stations
  3. An area for viewing and printing from Microfilm and Microfiche.
  4. Ten small group study rooms (two of which have marmoleum flooring and are primarily for use by environmentally sensitive students)
  5. A full service Circulation and Reserve Desk
  6. The library's Book collection
  7. The library's Video collection

The second floor of the library building has an electronic classroom with 24 multimedia workstations which are connected to the Internet, the library's online catalog, and the library's CD-ROM Tower databases. The Library Instruction program teaches credit courses and course-related individual instruction sessions from this classroom.

On the second floor there are also two large quiet study rooms on either side of the 18' wide corridor that leads to the Learning Centers. One of the goals of the 1997 remodel was to link the Learning Centers in building 1050 to the Library building. Now that this has been accomplished the library will staff a second Circulation Desk in the corridor where the two buildings come together on the second floor. Students may check materials out at a point between these two buildings and cross between these two buildings during daytime hours. The learning centers in the 1050 building are those which provide student learning services in these areas: English as a Second Language, Reading, Writing, Foreign Language Lab, Mathematics, Learning Skills, and the Tutorials Center.

The Terrace area: The Terrace area provides a new home for the Cabrillo College Gallery, Assessment, and the college mail room and staff lounge for the entire campus.

In the "cave" area there is a new Teaching and Learning Center where Cabrillo College instructors and staff will be introduced to new technologies which will enhance the curriculum at the college. An open access computing (computers for word processing) lab for Cabrillo College students is also available.
