Most email services provide ways for you to attach things like images and documents to emails. Why would you want to do that?

  • Maybe you have a new, cool electronic picture of yourself surfing off the California coast that you'd like to send someone in Minnesota
  • Maybe you've written a paper in Word (in one of the open access labs here on campus) and you want to email it to yourself
  • And there are lots of other reasons.

First, you have to have an image or document to send. Let's get one of each.

For an image --

  1. Search for an image
  2. Right click on the image; scroll down to Save Image As (or Save Picture As)
  3. Save the image to the Desktop. You can rename it if you want. Save it with a .jpg (for photographs and images with lots of detail), or a .gif (other images) extension. [If you were at home, you could save it anywhere you want, but since you're on a public machine in the Library, just save it on the Desktop]

For a Word document -- let's just get something someone else has written.

Go to the search engine Google and click to go to the Advanced Search mode. Here's a search for a Word document about butterflies in Santa Cruz:

Bring up the Word document, and save it to the Desktop.

Now -- go to your Email service. I'll illustrate this using Yahoo mail. Your email may look a bit different, but the process will be similar.

On Yahoo mail, you click on Attach Files. If you have another email service, look for something similar.

Your next step is to Browse to find your file(s), then click to attach it (them). So, click on Browse, go to the Desktop, and click on one of your files for File 1. Then, repeat the process for File 2.

Then click on the Attach Files and Done buttons, and send your message!

If you want to, you can send your message to me at Yahoo and I can check that the process worked out for you. My email address at Yahoo is topsysmalley2003@yahoo.com
