4: Find out who owns a Web domain name |
You have heard
people refer to an organization called FlexYour Rights -- flexyourrights.org.
You visit their Web site. Who is the person who bought that domain
name?
Hint -- There
are a number of places on the Web that allow you to find out who purchased
a specific domain name. Sometimes this provides information that helps
you evaluate the quality of a Web site. The general directory for domain
name registrants is called the WHOIS directory. We are
going to use the WHOIS directory that's available at whois.com
- Go to http://www.whois.com The
primary use of a WHOIS directory is to find out if a domain name you
want has already been purchased by someone. Another use is to find
out something about the person who is the owner of a specific domain
name.
- Type in the
domain name flexyourrights.org and click GO.
Note that the default is .com, so you would have
to change that to .org as shown here.

On the next screen,
scroll down and click on WHOIS LOOKUP

On the next screen,
scroll down to get information (name and address) about the person who
bought the domain name.
