HINTS for
Internet Adventures for Beginners

Here are some hints to help you formulate your searches.

1. Someone has told you that an organization called Women Chefs and Restaurateurs is having a conference this Fall. Where and when is it?

HINT: If you search on the phrase "women chefs and restaurateurs," the right Web page is probably at the top of the results list. If you don't get there, check how you typed the word restaurateurs...it's a tricky one!

2. You'd like to explore where you can get restaurant uniforms and chef apparel on the Web. What are some good Web resources?

HINT: Use Google. Typing in "chef apparel," or "restaurant uniforms" gets you quite a few resources. Click on some of them and decide which ones offer articles you like.

You could do a more specialized search, e.g., for "chef hats," or "bib aprons."

You'll notice that there are some "Sponsored Links" above the search results, and over on the right. These are commercial companies that pay Google for placement when people look up those words. This is how Google stays in business -- you can search for free because enough companies pay Google for these kinds of placements. (As advertisements, they're not too bothersome. Especially for the Internet!)

3. Your instructors have told you it's important to stay current with food recalls and alerts. Where on the Web can you find the official United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (also known as FSIS) list of Food Recalls and Alerts? Hint -- once you get to the FSIS Web site, look for FSIS Recalls.

What is one of the Active FSIS recall cases? What's the date on it? Is there a press release?

HINT: Again, using those quotation marks helps! Searching for "food safety and inspection service" works. The initialism FSIS is specific enough that you can also use just that.

Once you get to the Web site, notice that the URL (Web address) has .gov in it -- meaning that it's a government Web site. (The URL is also given in the search results list.)

Look for FSIS Recalls under Browse by Subject.
