Search tips

The following table illustrates the operation of Boolean terms:

Each result contains all search terms.	Each result contains at least one search term.	Results do not contain the specified terms.
The search hygiene and dental finds items that contain both hygiene and dental	The search hygiene or dental finds items that contain either hygiene or items that contain dental.	The search hygiene not dental finds items that contain hygiene but do not contain dental.

If you search for "dental hygiene" in an EBSCO database, the system will treat the words in quotes by retrieving those words only when they occur in that exact order.

For example: "dental hygiene" (in quotes) retrieves over 500 articles but,
dental AND hygiene retrieves over 1800 articles.

Try this search: "oral health" AND California (limited to full text, we get only 19 articles)
Try this search (use quotes around a phrase to guarantee that the results will be in that order)
"dental care" AND California (limited to full text, we get 36 articles)

Try this search: "Materials Safety Data Sheets" OR MSDS ____________

select Fulltext Articles from the Library Homepage at http://libwww.cabrillo.edu
Select one of the Health & Medicine databases
Type in your search terms
click in the Full Text box (Under: Limit your search) to select fulltext articles.
click in the Cabrillo College Library journals box to include magazines which are not available online in fulltext,
but are owned by Cabrillo library.
Click on
Choose one article to look at. Click on the HTML Full Text or the PDF Full Text icon under the brief description of the article you want to look at.
What can you do besides read this on your screen?
- Print the article: Click on the Print button at the top of the screen. It costs ten cents per page and you pick them up at the Circulation Desk. You should fill out a "Pay for Print" form.
- Email the article to yourself or a friend: Click on E-mail Check the option box for citation and any available full text; type in the email address; click on the submit button.
- Save the article to your disk: Click on Save and follow the directions.
- If you have a home computer, internet access and a current, valid library card you can use these fulltext online library resources. You must be at the library homepage:
  http://libwww.cabrillo.edu
  Then select "Fulltext Articles" from the library homepage and follow the directions.
- You can get a library card in person at the Circulation (check-out) desk in the library OR you can apply for a card online and it will be mailed to you. To apply online, select Library Catalog from the library homepage and then choose Apply for a Library Card
