Library Use Basics

name__________________________________

If you're new to computers, or to the Internet and the Web, you might want to first explore these Internet and Library Instruction resources. You might find these resources for improving your keyboarding/typing skills useful.

1. Find Books

If you are using the Cabrillo College Library in Aptos, follow these steps:

To introduce you to the online catalog, you're going to look for a book on endangered species.

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage by typing http://libwww.cabrillo.edu/ into the Location or Address box towards the top of the screen
  2. Click on Library Catalog (the 1st icon on the lefthand side of the screen)
  3. The screen is set to do a WORDS search. This option enables you to look for words used in titles and subjects.
  4. Type in endangered species and hit the Enter key, or click on GO

Select a book by clicking on an underlined book title.

The library's catalog contains information about books, videos, CD-ROMs, etc. that the library has.  You want to select a book.  The library also has about 9,000 electronic books (eBooks) -- these are online titles that you read on the computer. Online books are identified by the word Online or Electronic resource after the book title. (If you're curious, you can read about how you use eBooks.) For this exercise, select a book that is physically in the library (i.e., do not select an electronic book).

Books can be shelved in the main stacks, in the reference area, in the folio stacks, and a few other places.  You want to select a book that is shelved in the main stacks.

Please write the following information about the book you have selected.

Author's name______________________

Book title__________________________

Call number_________________________

Check the book's  status.  If the status says "check shelves," the book should be available. If the book is checked out, a due date will be displayed.

Should the book be available in the stacks?  ___ yes; ___ no.

Here's the Cabrillo College Library floorplan.

Go to the book shelves in the library -- the main stacks (# 1 on the floorplan) -- and find your book.  If your selected book is out (or not where it should be), notice that books shelved nearby are on similar topics.  If you have any difficulty finding the book on the shelves, stop by the library's Reference/Instruction Desk for assistance.

If you are using the Watsonville Public Library, follow these steps:

3. Use the Internet: Introduction
The Internet offers a huge, and always growing, set of resources.  Some materials on the Internet are very useful.  Some materials are of questionable value.  It's important to evaluate resources you access on the Internet.  One good guide for doing so is Evaluating Internet Resources

The Cabrillo College Library Web site lists, describes, and organizes selected resources and tools that help you search the Internet.  We'll introduce you to some of them.

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage by typing http://libwww.cabrillo.edu into the the Location or Address box towards the top of the screen. [If you are at a computer in the Library, just click on HOME towards the top of the screen.]
  2. Click on Internet Links (the 3rd icon down on the lefthand part of the screen)
  3. On the next screen, scroll down and click on English. When you get to the English Web page, you'll see that here are some Internet links to selected resources for English and writing.
  4. Under Specific Aspects, and then under Writing, click to go to the Paradigm Online Writing Assistant
  5. Scroll down and click and read the section on Writing Informal Essays or Writing Thesis/Support Essays.   Briefly summarize one piece of advice you are given:

4. Use the Internet: Subject Searching
TOPIC -- To get acquainted with Internet searching, let's say that you wanted to research the Santa Cruz long-toed salamander, which is a locally endangered species.  Let's say you want to write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper to alert people to this issue.  Here are some research steps you might take.
  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage
  2. Click on Search the Internet (the 4th icon down on the left side of the screen).

You are first going to use a Subject Directory.  Subject directories provide lists of selected Internet sites.  Yahoo! is one of the most popular subject directories.  From the Searching the Internet page:

  1. Click on Subject Lists and Directories
  2. Then click on Yahoo!
In Yahoo!'s search window, type  Santa Cruz long-toed salamander and hit the ENTER key

How many results did you get?  ___________

Click on some of the Web sites and read a bit. What are some facts you learned about this endangered species that you might want to include in your letter to the editor?

    _______________________________________________________________________

Next, we're going to use a search engine.  Search engines are the only tools that try to stay abreast of all the resources on the whole Internet.  Recent studies indicate that the Internet is growing by several million new Web pages a day.  The subject directories (since they are put together by human beings) can't keep up.  So, you also need to know how to use search engines.  We'll introduce you to Google, a large and very good search engine. Here's what you do:
  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage
  2. Click on Search the Internet
  3. Click on Search Engines
  4. Click on Google
In the search window, type "Santa Cruz long-toed salamander" and hit the ENTER key
NOTE: you use the quotation marks in a search engine to hold the words in a phrase together.

How many results did you get?  _________

Explore a few of the Web sites. What are some new facts you picked up?
