Review of Part One

We did a variety of things when you were here on Monday, but the things you learned to use that you will use in other classes are:

  • Biography Resource Center
  • Literature Resource Center
  • CREDO Reference
  • Academic Search Premier

You can look over the worksheet you filled out on Monday, and then please click to fill out a little review.

Part Two: Exploring Resources on 9/11

Different ways of evaluating Web resources

Purpose Occasionally, Web sites pretend to be objective but it turns out they have a hidden agenda, or they may be trying to persuade, promote, or sell something.

Authority Can you identify the author? Look for links that say "Who We Are," or something similar. Is their contact information. Can you learn anything about the author's background? What's the high level domain (.edu, .gov, .com)?

Reliability Do links on the page work? Does it appear that the site will be around for a while?

Currency When was the Web resource last updated? If you can't find a date on the page, type javascript:alert(document.lastModified) in the address bar and hit Enter.

Coverage What information is included or omitted?

Let's look at some resources

What do you think of these Web sites?

Peoples' stories Offical and trustworthy

Comspiracy theories

Spend some time looking at all or most of the above Web sites. When you explore the conspiracy theory sites, try to ask yourself questions to apply critical thinking to understanding the information that is presented. Make notes here about something you learned, or questions you have thought about.

Go to the Bulletin Board for this class. Click on Post a new message. Type in your name and write a short paragraph about what you have learned or thought about after exploring these 9/11 Web sites. You don't have to comment on all of them. Just comment on something you found interesting or new or surprising.

Finding newspaper articles

Look up one newspaper article about 9/11 or some topic connected to the terrorist attacks. Here's how you do that:

  • Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage
  • Click on Full Text Articles [second icon down, on left]
  • Over on right, under News, click on Proquest Newspapers
  • Type in a topic and click on Search

    What did you find?

    Date of newspaper_______________________________
