1. Use the library's online catalog to find books

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage  [If you are at an Information Workstation in the library, just click on HOME towards the top of the screen.] 
  2. Click on Library Catalog
  3. Choose one of the following topics

  4. ___ football rules;  ___ weight training; 

    ___ study skills;  ___ reading in college

    The library's online catalog contains information about books, electronic books, videos, DVDs, etc. that the library has. 

    Search on the topic you picked and select a book (not an electronic book). Books may be shelved in the main stacks, in reference, in the folio stacks, and a few other places.  Note where your book is shelved (i.e., look where it says LOCATION).

    Check the book's  status.  Should it be available?  ___ yes; ___ no. 

Electronic books -- The library now has over 15,000 electronic books (eBooks) available, from a company called NetLibrary. These are books that you read on your computer. They are easy to use! If you are on campus, at either Aptos or Watsonville, you can just click through to read an eBook. If you're off campus (e.g., at your computer at the public library or at home), just type in your library card number to read them.

To get to all the eBooks in one search --

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage
  2. Click on Full Text Articles (second icon down on left)
  3. Under General, click on NetLibrary e-Books

    Search using the topic you used above, or some other topic.

2. Use Encyclopaedia Britannica Online

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage
  2. Click on Full Text Articles 
  3. Click on Encyclopaedia Britannica (listed in the center, under Encyclopedias/Background Information)
Find information in the encyclopedia about a topic in which you're interested
  1. Click in the search box
  2. Type in your topic (topic of your choice)
  3. Press Enter or click the SEARCH button

3. Use Academic Search Premier to find periodical articles 
Academic Search Premier provides access to information about articles published in approximately 8000 periodicals; for about 4500 of those periodicals, full text copies of the articles are in the database. 

Here's how you use Academic Search Premier

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage 
  2. Click on Full Text Articles 
  3. On the next screen, under General, click on Academic Search Premier
  4. On the next screen, click on  
  5. On the next screen, click in the small box next to Full Text. This limits your search to materials that are in the database in full text format.
  6. Type in your search terms.  Then click on Search
Pick a topic to explore -- something of interest to you.

From the results list, click on the article title to get more information about it.

Just so you know -You can read the article on the screen. You can print it out. You can email articles to yourself. See the top of the screen for those options.

4. Find Newspaper Articles using Proquest Newspapers (NY Times, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Christian Science Monitor

  1. From the Cabrillo College Library homepage, click on Full text Articles  
  2. Click on Proquest Newspapers (in righthand column, under News)
Type in your search terms and click on Search. 

Find an article about a topic of your choice and note basic information about it here

5. Blogs! If you haven't started blogging, you will soon, I predict. ; -) Blogs are Web logs -- sort of a cross between a personal newspaper and a journal that you keep on the Web. There are now indexes to blogs. A very large one comes from Google (natch -- Google is taking over the world, right?).

  1. Go to Google Blog Search
  2. Search for "Cabrillo football" (use the quotation marks to keep the words in that order)

Google has now introduced Universal Search, which blends information from a variety of previously separate sources. When you search on Google now, in addition to the Web, you also search videos, images, news, books and so forth. When you're on Google, you can click on more to switch to Blog Search, or some of their other services.

6. Videos! You probably use YouTube.com.

  1. Go to Google Video
  2. Can you find the video for the West Hills College Falcons Basketball vs Cabrillo College in Coalinga?

7. Transferring an Image from the Web to a Word doc
The Web is rich in images. If you copy and include the image in something you write, the origin of the image should be acknowledged. In a formal paper, use a style guide to cite your source. At the minimum, give the title of the Web site and the complete URL (you can just copy and paste the URL into your Word document -- Ctrl C to copy; Ctrl V to paste).

To get an image go to

To insert an image into a Word document:

  1. On the Web, right click on the image; scroll down and click to copy
  2. Open a Word document (START -> programs -> Word)
  3. Position your cursor where you want the top left part of your image to be and paste (Edit -> Paste, or Ctrl V)

Your image is there. You can write next to and below the image. To put text around the image -- click on the image, go to Format -> Picture. Click on Wrapping tab, and select the wrapping format you want.

8. Help in writing papers and writing citations

  • Cabrillo's Writing Center -- get help here on campus!
  • Use OWL (Online Writing Lab) at Purdue University for lots of good information about researching and writing papers.
  • You may find it fun to use a program on the Web that formats citations for you. It's called NoodleTools. Scroll down and click on Noodle Bib MLA Starter.
