1. Use the library's online catalog to find books

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage 
  2. Click on Library Catalog
  3. Choose one of the following topics

    The library's online catalog has information about books (print or electronic), videos, DVDs, etc. that the library has. 

    Search on the topic you picked and select a book. Books may be shelved in the main stacks, in reference, in the folio stacks, and a few other places; or it may be available electronically.  Note where your book is shelved (i.e., look where it says LOCATION), or, if it's an electronic book, notice that it's accessible via the Internet.

Electronic books -- Over 18,000 electronic books (eBooks) are available to you are from a company called NetLibrary. They are easy to use! If you are on campus, at either Aptos or Watsonville, you can just click through to read an eBook. If you're off campus (e.g., at your computer at the public library or at home), just type in your library card number to read them.

You may have run across an electronic book or two in the search you just did, but to get to all the eBooks in one search --

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage
  2. Click on Full Text Articles (second icon down on left)
  3. Under General, click on NetLibrary e-Books

    Search using the topic you used above, or some other topic. What did you find?

2. Use Encyclopaedia Britannica Online

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage
  2. Click on Full Text Articles 
  3. Click on Encyclopaedia Britannica (listed in the center, under Encyclopedias/Background Information)
Find information in the encyclopedia about a topic in which you're interested
  1. Click in the search box
  2. Type in your topic (topic of your choice)
  3. Press Enter or click the SEARCH button

3. Use Academic Search Premier to find periodical articles 
Academic Search Premier provides access to information about articles published in approximately 8000 periodicals; for about 4500 of those periodicals, full text copies of the articles are in the database. 

Here's how you use Academic Search Premier

  1. Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage 
  2. Click on Full Text Articles 
  3. On the next screen, under General, click on Academic Search Premier
  4. Click to go to Advanced Search

Here's a search for articles that talk about transfer to a four year college. Note that I limited the search to full text articles.

From the results list, click on the article title to get more information about it.

You can click to email the article. And to cite it!!

4. Find Newspaper Articles using Proquest Newspapers (NY Times, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Christian Science Monitor

5. 360 SEARCH -- A new search capability! You can now search more than one database at a time.

  1. From the Cabrillo College Library homepage, click on Full Text Articles
  2. Click on  
  3. If you select Quick Search, the large more general databases will be searched. You can select all the databases, or narrow you search by general subject area or type of resource. The default setting is to search words in titles. You might experiment with changing that to keyword.

6. Google searching

Google has introduced Universal Search, which blends information from a variety of previously separate sources. When you search on Google now, in addition to the Web, you also search videos, images, news, books and so forth.

Go to Google.com. Try searching in something other than the Web -- choose Books or Scholar. What did you find?

7. Videos! You probably use YouTube.com. Google has bought YouTube.

  1. Go to Google Video
  2. Can you find the video for the West Hills College Falcons Basketball vs Cabrillo College in Coalinga?
  3. You'll also want to know about Blinkx -- lots and lots of videos available there!

8. Transferring an Image from the Web to a Word doc
The Web is rich in images. If you copy and include the image in something you write, the origin of the image should be acknowledged. In a formal paper, use a style guide to cite your source. At the minimum, give the title of the Web site and the complete URL (you can just copy and paste the URL into your Word document -- Ctrl C to copy; Ctrl V to paste).

To get an image go to

To insert an image into a Word document:

  1. On the Web, right click on the image; scroll down and click to copy
  2. Open a Word document (START -> programs -> Word)
  3. Position your cursor where you want the top left part of your image to be and paste (Edit -> Paste, or Ctrl V)

Your image is there. You can write next to and below the image. To put text around the image -- click on the image, go to Format -> Picture. Click on Wrapping tab, and select the wrapping format you want.

  • Use OWL (Online Writing Lab) at Purdue University for lots of good information about researching and writing papers.
