Instructions for Using the Closed-Caption
Video Stations
- The stations in the media viewing area that are set up to view closed-caption
videos are stations number 1, 2, and 3.
-
Turn the power on for the monitor and for the VCR.
-
Check to make sure that the monitor is on channel 3.
-
Make sure that the video being viewed is indeed captioned. Not all
are. Check the MARC record in the on-line library catalog if you
are unsure.
-
Play the tape as you normally would.
-
The station can be changed back to a regular video viewing station (no
captions visible) by changing the menu options on the television.
Troubleshooting Problems With the Closed-Caption Reader
VCRs
If there is no picture or no sound at the closed caption station:
-
Check to make sure that all of the connections are intact between the TV
and the VCR.
-
Make sure that the power is on for both the monitor and the VCR.
- Make sure that channel 3 or 4 is set on the monitor.
-
Make sure that the TV/VCR switch on the VCR is set to VCR.
If no captions appear on the screen:
-
Make sure that the video you are watching does indeed feature closed caption
encoding. It should state this somewhere on the video box.
-
Get the remote control from Stainback's office and check the setting for
the television monitor. You must have the remote control to set the
monitor to closed caption mode, or to change it back to regular viewing
mode, because you cannot access the menu for the monitor without the remote.
Choose "Menu." Use the down arrow to choose "Closed Caption."
Under "Mode" select "Caption," (not Text" or "Off"). Under "Data"
choose "Channel 1," (not "Channel 2"). Press "Menu" to go back to
regular viewing mode.
