JAWS (Job Access With Speech) JAWS is a screen reader for the blind.  It is available on a workstation near the Reference Desk and on a workstation in the Library electronic classroom.
On both workstations, the icon is under the "Programs" submenu in the "Start" menu.

Directions for Use
To begin:
Put on headphones.  Load JAWS.  Tap the Control key to temporarily silence JAWS.  Load Netscape. Tap the
Ctrl key to temporarily silence JAWS.  Load Netscape.  Once Netscape is fully loaded, JAWS begins speaking screen
contents.  The user's taks is to listen.  Once a screen has been heard, explore the screen for links and form field.s

How to Hear Netscape Screens:
Just listen.  JAWS will automatically read new screens in Netscape.  JAWS reads only down to the bottom of the
screen.  Tape the PgDn key to move down the page; JAWS will once again automatically read the new screen
contents.  PgUp will move up on a screen.

How to Get to Links:

  1. Tap the Tab key to move from link to link
  2. Press Enter to go to a link
  3. Enter Shift-Tab to go back through links
How to Get to a Forms Field:
  1. Tap Insert-Tab to move to the first forms field on a page
  2. Tab or Insert-Tab moves to the next one
  3. If it is necessary to move the JAWS focus from a forms field, tap Ctrl-PgDn to restore interactivity
How to Re-read a Screen:
The easiest way to re-listen is to tap the PgDn key and immediately tap the PgUp key.  JAWS will once
again read the screen.  Do the reverse when at the bottom of a page.

If it is not possible to move down or up a screen, use the Alt-Left Arrow to go back one screen and then
immediately use Alt-Right Arrow to return to the screen which is to be re-read.

How to Manually Read a Netscape Screen:
Sometimes a user wants to explore screen contents independently--to rehear specific information, to
check spelling, etc.  It is possible to do this by activating the JAWS cursos -- which then allows the user
to have JAWS move the equivalent of the mouse pointer around to read.  After using the JAWS cursor,
the user must return to the application cursor in order to return control of the screen to Netscape.  JAWS
uses the numeric keypad for its command keys.

When through manually reading the screen, return control to Netscape by tapping the Plus
key on the numeric keypad.  JAWS will say "PC cursor."
